In the hadith of Jabir, which was reported by Muslim and others (2), it is stated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered Makkah at the height of the mid-morning (duha), knelt his camel at the Banu Shaybah Gate, and entered the mosque. It is recommended to raise one's hands upon seeing the House (al-Bayt). This has been narrated from Ibn 'Umar and Ibn 'Abbas. Malik, however, did not view the raising of hands as appropriate, based on what was narrated from al-Muhajir al-Makki, who said: Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah was asked about a man who sees the House: 'Should he raise his hands?' He said: 'I did not think anyone would do (3) this except the Jews. We performed Hajj with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he did not do it.' Reported by al-Nasa'i (4). Our argument is what Abu Bakr ibn al-Mundhir reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), that he said: "Hands are not to be raised except in seven places: at the opening of prayer, facing the House, upon al-Safa and al-Marwah (5), and at the two stations and the two jamrat" (6). This is a statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), whereas that [other report] is a statement of Jabir, and his account is based on his opinion and his own practice, and he has been contradicted in this by Ibn 'Umar and Ibn 'Abbas. Furthermore, supplication (du'a) is recommended upon seeing the House, and it has been commanded to raise the hands during supplication.

Section: It is recommended to supplicate upon seeing the House, by saying: "O Allah, You are Peace (al-Salam), and from You is peace, so greet us, our Lord, with peace. O Allah, increase this House in honor, nobility, reverence, awe, and righteousness, and increase those who honor and ennoble it, from among those who perform Hajj and 'Umrah to it, in honor,"

(2) We did not find this from the hadith of Jabir in Muslim or others. As for his entry (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) from the Banu Shaybah Gate, it can be found in al-Sunan al-Kubra by al-Bayhaqi 5/72. See also Talkhis al-Habir 2/243. (3) In the manuscripts: "yaf'alahu" is an error. (4) In: The Chapter of Raising the Hands upon Seeing the House, from the Book of Rites. Al-Mujtaba 5/167. It was also reported by Abu Dawud, in: The Chapter of Raising the Hands when Seeing the House, from the Book of Rites. Sunan Abi Dawud 1/432. And al-Tirmidhi, in: The Chapter of What Has Been Reported Regarding the Dislike of Raising the Hands upon Seeing the House, from the Chapters of Hajj. 'Aridat al-Ahwadhi 4/87. (5) Omitted from the original. (6) Al-Haythami cited it in: The Chapter of Raising the Hands upon Seeing the House, from the Book of Hajj. Majma' al-Zawa'id 3/238. See what al-Zayla'i said in: The Chapter of the Description of Prayer, from the Book of Prayer. Nasb al-Rayah 1/389-392.
