circumambulation, and this is Qur'an, and because circumambulation is prayer, and recitation is not disliked in prayer. Ibn al-Mubarak (5) said: There is nothing better than the recitation of the Qur'an. It is recommended to supplicate during circumambulation and to increase the remembrance of Allah Almighty; because that is recommended in all circumstances, so in the state of engaging in this act of worship, it is more appropriate. It is recommended that he refrain from speech, except for the remembrance of Allah Almighty, or the recitation of the Qur'an, or enjoining good, or forbidding evil, or what is necessary; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "Circumambulation of the House is prayer, so whoever speaks, let him not speak except good." (6) There is no harm in drinking during circumambulation; because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) drank during circumambulation. It was narrated by Ibn al-Mundhir, who said: I do not know of anyone who prohibited it (7).
Section: If he doubts his state of purity while he is in circumambulation, his circumambulation is not valid; because he doubted a condition of the act of worship before finishing it, so it is similar to one who doubts his purity in prayer while he is in it. If he doubts after finishing it, nothing is required of him; because doubting a condition of the act of worship after finishing it has no effect on it. If he doubts the number of circumambulations, he relies on certainty. Ibn al-Mundhir said: All the scholars whom we have memorized [opinions from] have reached a consensus on that. And because it is an act of worship, whenever one doubts it while in it, he relies on certainty, like prayer. If a trustworthy person informs him of (8) the number of his circumambulations, he refers to him if he is just. If he doubts that after finishing his circumambulation, he pays no attention to it, just as if he doubted the number of rak'ahs after finishing the prayer. Ahmad said: If two men are circumambulating, and they disagree on the circumambulation, they rely on certainty. This is interpreted as referring to when they both doubt; as for when one of them is certain of his own situation, he does not pay attention to the statement of the other.
