المغني لابن قدامة - ت التركي

623 - Issue: He said: "And if (1) he forgets to trot (ramal) during some of his Sa'i, there is nothing upon him."

The entirety of this is that the trot in the bottom of the valley is a recommended sunnah, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed Sa'i, and his companions performed Sa'i. Safiyya bint Shaybah narrated from the mother of a son of Shaybah, who said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performing Sa'i between al-Safa and al-Marwah, [and he was saying] (2): "The valley (al-abtah) is not traversed except at a quick pace (shaddan)." This is not obligatory, and there is no penalty for one who omits it, for Ibn Umar said: If I perform Sa'i between al-Safa and al-Marwah, I have seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) perform Sa'i, and if I walk, I have seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) walk, and I am an old man. Both were narrated by Ibn Majah (3), and Abu Dawud (4) narrated this. Furthermore, because omitting the trot during the circumambulation of the House entails no penalty, then [the same rule applying] between al-Safa and al-Marwah is more appropriate.

Section: There is a difference of opinion regarding the Sa'i. It is narrated from Ahmad that it is a pillar (rukn), and the Hajj is not complete without it. This is the opinion of Aishah, Urwah, Malik, al-Shafi'i, and al-Awza'i, based on what is narrated from Aishah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) circumambulated, and the Muslims circumambulated—meaning between al-Safa and al-Marwah—and it became a sunnah. By my life, Allah has not completed the Hajj of one who did not circumambulate between al-Safa and al-Marwah. Narrated by Muslim (5). And from Habibah bint Abi Tajrah (6), one of the women of the Banu Abd al-Dar,
