This tawaf is indispensable, and it is a detainment for one who has not performed it. Furthermore, because Hajj is one of the two rituals, this tawaf is a pillar (rukn), just as it is for the 'Umrah.
Section: This tawaf has two times: a time of excellence (fadhilah) and a time of sufficiency (ijza'). As for the time of excellence, it is the Day of Sacrifice after the pelting, the offering of the sacrifice, and the shaving, based on the statement of Jabir regarding the description of the Prophet's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) Hajj on the Day of Sacrifice: He proceeded (afada) to the House and prayed Dhuhr in Makkah. In the hadith of 'Aisha, in which she mentions the menstruation of Safiyyah, she said: We proceeded (afadna) on the Day of Sacrifice. Ibn 'Umar said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) proceeded (afada) on the Day of Sacrifice, then returned and prayed Dhuhr. Both are agreed upon. If one delays it until the night, there is no harm, as Ibn 'Abbas and 'Aisha both reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) delayed the Tawaf al-Ziyarah until the night. Both were recorded by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi. He said regarding each one of them: A hasan (good) hadith.
