Mas'ud: I prayed with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in Mina two rak'ahs, and with Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman for the early part of his rule (1). This is when the Imam is acceptable; if he is not acceptable, the person should pray with his companions in his lodging.

Section: It is recommended that the Imam deliver a sermon on the second day of the days of Tashriq, in which [he teaches the people] (2) the ruling on hastening and delaying, and their farewell. This is the opinion of al-Shafi'i and Ibn al-Mundhir. Abu Hanifa said: It is not recommended, by analogy to the other two days. Our evidence is what was narrated from two men from the Banu Bakr, who said: We saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) preaching during the middle of the days of Tashriq, and we were at his mount. Narrated by Abu Dawud (3). From Sarra' bint Nabhān, she said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) addressed us on the Day of the Heads (4), and said: "What day is this?" We said (5): Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: "Is it not the middle of the days of Tashriq?" (6). Al-Daraqutni (7) narrated with his chain from Abd al-Aziz ibn al-Rabi' ibn Sabra, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) preached on the middle (8) of the days of Tashriq, meaning the day of the first departure. And because the people have a need for him to teach them how to hasten and how to bid farewell, unlike the first day.
