days. And if you wish, donate three sa's of dates among six poor people." All of this was narrated by Abu Dawud. This is the view of Mujahid, al-Nakha'i, Abu Mijlaz, al-Shafi'i, Malik, and the People of Opinion (Ashab al-Ra'y). Al-Hasan, 'Ikrimah, and Nafi' said: The fasting is ten days, and the charity is for ten poor people. It is narrated from al-Thawri and the People of Opinion that they said: Half a sa' of wheat is sufficient for each poor person, and for dates and barley, it is a full sa' for each. Following the Sunnah is more appropriate.
Section: Wheat, barley, and raisins are sufficient for the Fidyah, because in every instance where dates are sufficient, these are also sufficient, just like in Zakat al-Fitr and the expiation for an oath. Abu Dawud narrated in the Hadith of Ka'b ibn 'Ujrah that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of God be upon him) called me and said to me: "Shave your head, and fast for three days, or feed six poor people a faraq of raisins, or offer a sheep as a sacrifice." Narrated by Abu Dawud. It is not sufficient to give less than three sa's of these types, except for wheat, regarding which there are two narrations: The first is that a mudd of wheat is sufficient for each poor person, instead of half a sa' of something else, as in the expiation for an oath. The second is that nothing is sufficient except half a sa', because the ruling was established in it through analogy or indication, and the derivative case must match its origin and not differ from it. This is the view of Malik and al-Shafi'i.
Section: If he shaves and then shaves again, the obligation is a single Fidyah, as long as he has not performed the expiation for the first before committing the second. If he performed the expiation for the first and then shaved a second time, then he owes an expiation for the second as well. The same ruling applies if he wears [and then wears] or applies perfume [and then applies perfume], or repeats any
