Umayyah, that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, what is your opinion regarding a man who entered into ihram for 'Umrah while smeared with perfume? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) remained silent—meaning for a moment—then he said: "Wash off the perfume that is on you," three times, "and remove the jubbah (outer garment) from you, and do in your 'Umrah what you do in your Hajj." [Agreed upon]. And because he is prohibited from initiating it, he is prohibited from maintaining it, just like [the prohibition of] wearing [stitched] clothing. Our evidence is the statement of 'Aishah: "I used to perfume the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for his ihram before he entered into it, and for his exit from ihram before he circumambulated the House." She said: "It is as if I am looking at the sheen of the perfume in the parting of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while he was in a state of ihram." [Agreed upon].
