exclusively, or is it for eternity?" He said: "Rather, it is for eternity." In another wording he said: "For our year, or for eternity?" He said: "Rather, for eternity, 'Umrah has entered into Hajj until the Day of Resurrection" (28). In the hadith of Jabir which was recorded by Muslim (29) regarding the description of the Hajj of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), there is something similar to this. Its meaning, and Allah knows best, is that the people of the Pre-Islamic Era (Jahiliyyah) did not deem tamattu' permissible, and they considered performing 'Umrah during the months of Hajj to be among the gravest of sins. Thus, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) clarified that Allah the Almighty has prescribed 'Umrah during the months of Hajj and rendered tamattu' permissible until the Day of Resurrection.

Tawus said: "The people of the Pre-Islamic Era used to consider 'Umrah during the months of Hajj the gravest of sins. They would say: 'When Safar has passed, the sores have healed (30), and the tracks have worn away, 'Umrah becomes permissible for one who performs it.' When Islam came, people were commanded to perform 'Umrah during the months of Hajj, so 'Umrah was allowed during the months of Hajj until the Day of Resurrection." This was recorded by Sa'id.

Abu Dharr has been contradicted by Ali, Sa'd, Ibn 'Abbas, Ibn 'Umar, 'Imran ibn Husayn, the rest of the Companions, and all Muslims. 'Imran said: "We performed tamattu' with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and the Quran was revealed regarding it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not forbid it, nor was anything revealed to abrogate it; yet a man spoke regarding it according to his own opinion as he pleased." (Agreed upon) (31). And Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas said: "We performed it with
