Many [other narrations] (5), and the Ummah has reached consensus that Riba is prohibited.
Section: Riba is of two types: Riba al-Fadl (interest in excess) and Riba al-Nasi'ah (interest in delay). The scholars have reached consensus on the prohibition of both. There was a disagreement among the Companions regarding Riba al-Fadl. It was narrated from Ibn Abbas, Usamah ibn Zayd, Zayd ibn Arqam, and Ibn al-Zubayr that they said: "Riba only exists in Nasi'ah," based on the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "There is no Riba except in Nasi'ah." It was recorded by Al-Bukhari (6). The most famous version of this is the view of Ibn Abbas. Subsequently, he reverted to the view of the group [the majority]. Al-Athram narrated this with his chain of transmission, and it was stated by Al-Tirmidhi, Ibn al-Mundhir, and others. Sa'id narrated with his chain of transmission from Abu Salih, who said: "I accompanied Ibn Abbas until he died, and by Allah, he never reverted [from his view] regarding exchange (sarf)." From Sa'id ibn Jubayr, he said: "I asked Ibn Abbas twenty nights before his death about exchange, and he saw no harm in it and used to authorize it." The correct view is that of the majority, due to the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Do not sell gold for gold unless it is equal for equal, and do not make one exceed (7) another.
