Umar said: "I was presented to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when I was fourteen years old, and he did not deem me fit for fighting. I was presented to him again when I was fifteen, and he accepted me." This is agreed upon. In another wording: "I was presented to him on the day of Uhud when I was fourteen, and he rejected me and did not see that I had reached puberty. I was presented to him in the year of the Trench when I was fifteen, and he accepted me." This was reported to Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, so he wrote to his governors: "Do not enlist anyone unless he has reached fifteen years of age." It was reported by al-Shafi'i in his Musnad, and it was reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: "It is a hasan sahih (good and sound) hadith." It was also narrated from Anas that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "When the newborn reaches fifteen years of age, what is to his credit and what is against him is recorded, and the hadd punishments are implemented upon him." Furthermore, age is a factor by which puberty is attained, in which the boy and girl share, so they are equal in it, just like the emission of semen. As for what the companions of Abu Hanifa mentioned, there is an answer to it in what we have narrated. What Dawud used as evidence does not prevent establishing puberty by means other than nocturnal emission if it is proven by evidence, which is why the growth of hair is a sign. As for menstruation, it is a sign of puberty, and we do not know of any disagreement regarding it. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Allah does not accept the prayer of a menstruating woman except with a khimar (head covering)." This was reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: "It is a hasan (good) hadith." As for pregnancy, it is a sign of
