Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal informed us, saying: I asked my father about a man who fights robbers while he knows that he has no strength against them, and they might kill him. My father said: "If he believes it is most likely that if he gives them what they want, they will let him go, then if he does not fight them, I hope that this will be permissible for him. But if he believes it is most likely that they will kill him, then he should defend himself as much as he is able." I said to my father: "A man encounters the enemy and robbers, and he knows that if he fights, there will be no harm to his enemy from his fighting them, should he fight them or surrender to them?" He replied: "This is like the first case."
