622 - Muhammad ibn Sa'id Abu Yahya al-'Attar informed us, saying: Ishaq al-Azraq narrated to us, saying: 'Abd al-Malik ibn Abi Sulayman narrated to us, from Salamah ibn Kuhayl, from Salim ibn Abi al-Ja'd, from Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah, who said: "I was with 'Ali when a man came to him and said: 'The Commander of the Believers is being killed right now.' So 'Ali stood up and I stood up with him, and I took hold of his waist, fearing for him. He said to me: 'Let go, may your mother be bereaved of you!' He set out until he reached the house, and the man [Uthman] had already been killed. 'Ali returned and went to his house, and the people entered upon him and said: 'This man has been killed, and the people must have a caliph, and we know of no one more deserving of it than you.' He said: 'If you insist upon me, then my pledge of allegiance (bay'ah) shall not be done in secret, but rather I shall go out to the mosque, and whoever wishes to pledge allegiance to me may do so.' He said: So he went out to the mosque and the people pledged allegiance to him."
٦٢٢ - وَأَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ أَبُو يَحْيَى الْعَطَّارُ، قَالَ: ثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ الْأَزْرَقُ، قَالَ: ثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ أَبِي سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ ابْنِ الْحَنَفِيَّةِ، قَالَ: كُنْتُ مَعَ عَلِيٍّ إِذْ أَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ: إِنَّ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مَقْتُولٌ السَّاعَةَ، فَقَامَ عَلِيٌّ وَقُمْتُ مَعَهُ فَأَخَذْتُ بِوَسَطِهِ تَخَوُّفًا عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ لِي: خَلِّ لَا أُمَّ لَكَ، فَانْطَلَقَ حَتَّى أَتَى الدَّارَ وَقَدْ قُتِلَ الرَّجُلُ، فَرَجَعَ عَلِيٌّ فَأَتَى دَارَهُ، فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ النَّاسُ فَقَالُوا: إِنَّ هَذَا الرَّجُلَ قَدْ قُتِلَ وَلَا بُدَّ لِلنَّاسِ مِنْ خَلِيفَةٍ، وَلَا نَعْلَمُ أَحَدًا أَحَقَّ بِهَا مِنْكَ. قَالَ: «إِنْ أَبَيْتُمْ عَلَيَّ فَإِنَّ بَيْعَتِي لَا تَكُونُ سِرًّا، وَلَكِنْ أَخْرُجُ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ، فَمَنْ شَاءَ أَنْ يُبَايِعَنِي بَايَعَنِي» . قَالَ: فَخَرَجَ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَبَايَعَهُ النَّاسُ
