And Muhammad ibn 'Ali informed me that Muhanna narrated to them, saying: I asked Ahmad about Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, and he said: "He was a Companion." I said: "Where is he from?" He replied: "He was a Meccan who resided in al-Sham (Syria)."
