Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Matar and Zakariya ibn Yahya informed me that Abu Talib narrated to them that he asked Abu 'Abd Allah [Ahmad ibn Hanbal]: "Should I say: Mu'awiyah is the maternal uncle of the believers? And Ibn 'Umar is the maternal uncle of the believers?" He replied: "Yes, Mu'awiyah is the brother of Umm Habibah bint Abi Sufyan, the wife of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and may Allah have mercy upon them both. And Ibn 'Umar is the brother of Hafsah, the wife of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and may Allah have mercy upon them both." I said: "Shall I say: Mu'awiyah is the maternal uncle of the believers?" He replied: "Yes."
