682 - 'Ali ibn Harb informed us, saying: Muhammad ibn Bishr told us, saying: Isma'il ibn Abi Khalid told us, from Qays, who said: Mu'awiyah fell ill with an illness that recurred, and he began turning his forearms over as if they were two palm branches, saying: "Is the world anything but what we have tasted or experienced? By Allah, I wish I would not remain among you for more than three [days]." They asked: "Toward the forgiveness of Allah and His mercy?" He replied: "Toward whatever Allah wills of a decree He has ordained for me; He knows that I have not been negligent, and what He has disliked, Allah, the Almighty and Exalted, is otherwise."
