688 - 'Abd Allah ibn Ahmad informed us, saying: My father told me, saying: Yahya ibn Ishaq told us, saying: Al-Layth ibn Sa'd informed us, from Yazid ibn Abi Habib, from Suwayd ibn Qays, from Zuhayr ibn Qays al-Balawi, from 'Alqamah ibn Rimthah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent 'Amr ibn al-'As. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out on a military expedition, and we went out with him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) dozed off, then awoke and said: "May Allah have mercy on 'Amr." He said: We began to discuss everyone whose name was 'Amr. He said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) dozed off and said: "May Allah have mercy on 'Amr." He said: Then he dozed off a third time, and when he awoke, he said: "May Allah have mercy on 'Amr." We said: "O Messenger of Allah, which 'Amr is this?" He said: "'Amr ibn al-'As." We said: "What is his affair?" He said: "Whenever I would call upon the people for charity, he would come and give abundantly from it. I would say: 'O 'Amr, from where did you get this?' And he would say: 'This is from Allah.'" He said: "'Amr has spoken the truth. Indeed, he has much goodness with Allah." Zuhayr ibn Qays said: When the Prophet (peace be upon him) passed away, I said: "I shall surely stick to this man concerning whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'Indeed, he has much goodness with Allah,' until I die."
