698 - Abu Bakr al-Marwudhi informed us, saying: Abu al-Fath al-Simsar narrated to me, saying: Bishr ibn al-Harith narrated to me, saying: Sulayman ibn Harb narrated to us, saying: Abu Hilal narrated to us, from Jabalah ibn 'Atiyyah, from Maslamah ibn Mukhallad, who said: He saw Mu'awiyah eating, or Maslamah narrated to him from a man who said: He saw Mu'awiyah eating. He said: So he (Maslamah) said to 'Amr ibn al-'As: "This cousin of yours is one who is well-provided for." He (Maslamah) said: "As for me, I am speaking, and I have heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say: 'O Allah, teach him the Book, establish him in the lands, and protect him from the punishment.'"
٦٩٨ - أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْمَرُّوذِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الْفَتْحِ السِّمْسَارُ، قَالَ ⦗٤٥١⦘: حَدَّثَنِي بِشْرُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ، قَالَ: ثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، قَالَ: ثَنَا أَبُو هِلَالٍ، عَنْ جَبَلَةَ بْنِ عَطِيَّةَ، عَنْ مَسْلَمَةَ بْنِ مُخَلَّدٍ، قَالَ: رَأَى مُعَاوِيَةَ يَأْكُلُ، أَوْ حَدَّثَهُ مَسْلَمَةُ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ، قَالَ: رَأَى مُعَاوِيَةَ يَأْكُلُ، قَالَ: فَقَالَ لِعَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ: إِنَّ ابْنَ عَمِّكَ هَذَا الْمُخَضَّدُ، قَالَ: أَمَا إِنِّي أَقُولُ وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «اللَّهُمَّ عَلِّمْهُ الْكِتَابَ، وَمَكِّنْهُ فِي الْبِلَادِ، وَقِهِ الْعَذَابَ»
