1001 - Ubayd Allah ibn Hanbal informed me, saying: My father, Hanbal ibn Ishaq, narrated to me, saying: Al-Humaydi narrated to us, saying: Sufyan narrated to us, saying: A man said to al-Zuhri: 'O Aba Bakr, what about the hadith of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him: "He is not of us who strikes the cheeks, and he is not of us who does not honor our elder," and other similar hadiths?' Sufyan said: Al-Zuhri lowered his head for a moment, then raised his head and said: 'Knowledge is from Allah, the Almighty and Majestic; the duty of the Messenger is to convey, and our duty is to submit.'
