1105 - Abd al-Malik ibn Abd al-Hamid al-Maymuni informed me, saying: Ibn Hanbal narrated to us, saying: Khalid ibn Hayyan narrated to us. And Abu Bakr al-Marwudhi informed us, saying: Abu Abd Allah [Ahmad ibn Hanbal] narrated to us, saying: Khalid ibn Hayyan narrated to us, saying: Ma'qil ibn Ubayd Allah al-Absi narrated to us, saying: "Salim al-Aftasi came to us with the doctrine of Irja', and he presented it; our companions reacted to it with extreme aversion. The most vehement in their aversion were Maymun ibn Mihran and Abd al-Karim ibn Malik al-Jazari. As for Abd al-Karim, he made a covenant with Allah that no roof would shelter both him and [Salim] except for the mosque.

Ma'qil said: So I went for Hajj, and I entered upon 'Ata' ibn Abi Rabah among a group of my companions, and he was reciting Surah Yusuf. He said: I heard him reading this verse: {Until, when the messengers gave up hope and thought that they were denied} [Yusuf: 110], with the word 'kudhibu' (denied) read with a light damma (takhfif). I said to him: 'I have a need of you, so please see me in private.' He complied, and I informed him that some people among us have introduced [innovations] and spoken, claiming that the prayer and Zakat are not part of the religion. He replied: 'Does Allah not say: {And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, being sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish the prayer and to give Zakat} [al-Bayyina: 5]? Therefore, the prayer and Zakat are part of the religion.' I said to him: 'They say there is no increase in faith.' He replied: 'Did Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, not say in what He revealed: {That they may increase in faith along with their [present] faith} [al-Fath: 4]? So what is this faith that increased them?'

I said: 'They have invoked your name, and it reached me that Ibn Dharr entered upon you with his companions, presented their opinion to you, and that you accepted it and supported this matter.' He replied: 'No, by Allah, besides Whom there is no god,' [repeating it] twice or three times. He said: 'Then I came to Medina and sat with Nafi'. I said: "O Abu Abd Allah, I have a need of you." He said: "[In] private or public?" I said: "No, rather in private." He said: "Perhaps there is a private matter that has no good in it." I said: "It is not of that sort." When we performed the afternoon prayer (Asr), he stood up, took my hand, left through the wicket gate, and did not wait for the storyteller. He said: "What is your need?" I said: "[Please] speak with me in private regarding this." He said: "Step aside, O 'Amr." He said: I told him about the emergence of their views. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "I have been commanded to strike them with the sword until they say: 'There is no god but Allah.' If they say: 'There is no god but Allah,' they have protected their blood and property from me, except by its right, and their account is with Allah." He said: I said to him: "They say: We acknowledge that the prayer is an obligation but we do not pray, that alcohol is forbidden but we drink it, and that marriage to mothers is forbidden but we do it?" He said: He pulled his hand away from my hand, then said: "Whoever does this is a disbeliever."
