1588 - He said: Abu Abd Allah narrated to us, saying: Waki' narrated to us, saying: Al-A'mash narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Wahb, from Hudhayfah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) narrated two hadiths to us, one of which I have seen, and I am awaiting the other. He narrated to us: "That trust (al-amanah) descended into the very depths of the hearts of men, and the Quran descended, so they learned from the Quran and they learned from the Sunnah." Then he told us about its removal, and said: "A man sleeps a sleep, and trust is snatched away from his heart, leaving behind an effect like the trace of a blister. Then a man sleeps a sleep, and trust is snatched away from his heart, leaving behind an effect like the mark of a callous, like an ember you roll onto your leg; you see it raised, yet there is nothing in it." He said: Then Hudhayfah picked up a pebble and rolled it on his leg. He said: "Then the people wake up transacting business, and hardly anyone is fulfilling their trust, until it is said: 'Among the tribe of such-and-such, there was a trustworthy man.' And until it is said of a man: 'How robust he is! How intelligent he is! How clever he is!' while there is not even the weight of a mustard seed of faith in his heart. There has come upon me a time when I would not care which of you I transacted with; for if he were a Muslim, his Islam would cause him to return it to me, and if he were a Jew or a Christian, his agent would cause him to return it to me. But as for today, I would not transact with any of you except for so-and-so and so-and-so."
