1701 - Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Ahmad ibn Ishaq ibn 'Isa al-Bazzaz narrated to us, [93] he said: I heard my father saying: A man from Sur, known as al-Suri, a dialectical theologian (mutakallim), arrived to us. He was of good appearance, as if he were a monk, and we were impressed by him. Then, upon being asked, he began saying to us: "Faith (iman) is created, Zakat is created, Hajj is created, and Jihad is created." We did not know how to refute him, so we went to 'Abd al-Wahhab al-Warraq and recounted his affair to him. He said: "I do not know what this is. Go to Abu 'Abd Allah Ahmad ibn Hanbal, for he is the expert authority (jahbadh) on this matter." My father said: So we went to Abu 'Abd Allah and informed him of the issues that he had put forth to us, just as 'Abd al-Wahhab had informed us. Abu 'Abd Allah said to us: "These are the issues of al-Jahm ibn Safwan, and there are seventy issues. Go and expel this man from among you."
