1779 - Ahmad ibn Asram al-Muzani informed me, saying: Ahmad ibn Hazim told me that he heard Abu Abd Allah [Ahmad ibn Hanbal] say; and Ahmad ibn Yahya al-Saffar informed me, saying: I heard al-Hasan ibn al-Bazzar say: Abu Abd Allah said; and Muhammad ibn Ali informed me, saying: Salih ibn Ahmad related to us, saying: I heard my father—and the meaning is the same—say: "The Jahmiyyah split into three sects: a sect who said: 'The Qur'an is created,' a sect who said: 'It is the Speech of Allah, and we remain silent,' and a sect who said: 'Our pronunciations are created.'" Salih ibn Ahmad added from his father, who said: "And Allah said in His Book: {Then grant him protection so that he may hear the Speech of Allah} [Al-Tawbah: 6]. Thus, Gabriel heard it from Allah, the Mighty and Majestic; the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) heard it from Gabriel (peace be upon him); and the Companions of the Prophet heard it from the Prophet. Therefore, the Qur'an is the Speech of Allah, not created."
