"Woe to those who write the Book with their own hands, then say: 'This is from God,' that they may sell it for a small price." Al-Kalbi said: They were the rabbis and scholars of the Jews who intentionally altered the description of the Prophet (ﷺ) in their Book, adding to it and removing from it. Then, they presented it to their commoners, saying: 'This is the description of the Prophet whom God will raise at the end of time, and he is not like the description of this man.' When the commoners looked at Muhammad (ﷺ), they did not see in him the description that was in the book their rabbis had written. The rabbis had a source of sustenance in this, so God, may He be glorified and exalted, said: "Woe to those who write the Book with their own hands, then say: 'This is from God,' that they may sell it for a small price," meaning: that sustenance. "Woe to them for what their hands have written, and woe to them for what they earn."
