“And [recall] when We took your covenant,” meaning: recall when We took your covenant, “and raised over you the mount, [saying], ‘Take what We have given you with determination,’” its interpretation has already passed. “And listen,” they said: “We hear and we disobey.” We heard what you said, and we disobeyed your command. He said: “And their hearts were imbued with [the worship of] the calf because of their disbelief.”
﴿وَإِذ أَخذنَا ميثاقكم﴾ أَي: واذْكُرُوا إِذْ أَخذنَا ميثاقكم ﴿وَرَفَعْنَا فَوْقَكُمُ الطُّورَ خُذُوا مَا آتيناكم بِقُوَّة﴾ قد مضى تَفْسِيره ﴿واسمعوا﴾ قَالُوا: ﴿سمعنَا وعصينا﴾ سَمِعْنَا مَا تَقُولُ، وعصينا أَمرك. قَالَ: ﴿وَأُشْرِبُوا فِي قُلُوبِهِمُ الْعِجْلَ بكفرهم﴾.
