"And when you have divorced women and they have fulfilled their term," until His saying: "And whoever does that has indeed wronged himself."
Yahya [narrated] from al-Jahm ibn Warrad: A man during the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him, said to his wife: "I will surely divorce you, then I will [withhold you] for nine menstrual cycles, [during which] you will not be able to marry anyone other than me." She said: "And how is that?" He said: "I will divorce you once, then I will [leave you] until your waiting period is near expiration, then I will take you back, then I will divorce you again. And when your waiting period is near expiration, I will take you back, then I will divorce you, then [you will complete] three menstrual cycles." Then Allah revealed (f. 33) this verse: "And when you have divorced women," until the end of it.
﴿وَإِذَا طَلَّقْتُمُ النِّسَاءَ فَبَلَغْنَ أَجَلَهُنَّ﴾ إِلَى قَوْله: ﴿وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ فقد ظلم نَفسه﴾.
يَحْيَى: عَنِ الْجَهْمِ بْنِ وَرَّادٍ؛ أَنَّ رَجُلا عَلَى عَهْدِ النَّبِيِّ عليه السلام قَالَ لامْرَأَتِهِ: لأُطَلِّقَنَّكِ، ثُمَّ [لأَحْبِسَنَّكِ] تسع حيض لَا تقدرين على أَنْ تَتَزَوَّجِي غَيْرِي. قَالَتْ: وَكَيْفَ ذَلِكَ؟! قَالَ: أُطَلِّقُكِ تَطْلِيقَةً، ثُمَّ [أَدَعُكِ] حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ عِنْدَ انْقِضَاءِ عِدَّتِكِ رَاجَعْتُكِ، ثُمَّ أُطَلِّقُكِ أُخْرَى، فَإِذَا كَانَ عِنْدَ انْقِضَاءِ عدتك رَاجَعتك ثمَّ أطلقك ثُمَّ [تَعْتَدِّينَ مِنْ] ثَلاثِ حِيَضٍ، فَأنْزل الله (ل ٣٣) هَذِهِ الآيَةَ ﴿وَإِذَا طَلَّقْتُمُ النِّسَاءَ﴾ إِلَى آخِرِهَا.
