"O you who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with reminders or injury." Regarding the interpretation of Al-Hasan, he said: Some believers would say, 'I did such-and-such and I spent such-and-such,' so Allah said: "O you who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with reminders or injury," so that you may become like those whose deeds Allah nullifies, "like the one who spends his wealth to be seen by the people and does not believe in Allah and the Last Day," and he is the hypocrite. "His likeness is that of a smooth stone upon which is dust," Qatada said: Al-safwan is the stone. "And it is hit by a downpour," meaning heavy rain, "leaving it bare," meaning clean. "They are unable to do anything with what they have earned." This is a parable Allah - the Exalted - has struck for the deeds of the disbelievers on the Day of Resurrection. He says: "They are unable to do anything with what they have earned" on that day, just as the heavy rain left this stone with nothing upon it. [Verses 264-266]
