"O People of the Book, why do you argue about Abraham, while the Torah and the Gospel were not revealed until after him? Do you not then reason?" Al-Hasan said: This is because they attributed him to being upon their religion; the Jews said that, and the Christians said that. So God refuted them all, and informed them that he was a Muslim. Then He argued against them that the Torah and the Gospel were only revealed after him; meaning: Judaism only existed after the Torah, and Christianity only after the Gospel.
﴿يَا أهل الْكِتَابِ لِمَ تُحَاجُّونَ فِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَمَا أُنْزِلَتِ التَّوْرَاةُ وَالإِنْجِيلُ إِلا من بعده أَفلا تعقلون﴾ قَالَ الْحسن: وَذَلِكَ أَنهم نحلوه أَنه كَانَ على دينهم؛ فَقَالَت الْيَهُود ذَلِك، وَقَالَت النَّصَارَى ذَلِك. فكذبهم الله جَمِيعًا، وَأخْبر أَنه كَانَ مُسلما، ثمَّ احْتج عَلَيْهِم أَنه إِنَّمَا أنزلت التَّوْرَاة وَالْإِنْجِيل بعده؛ أَي: إِنَّمَا كَانَت الْيَهُودِيَّة بعد التَّوْرَاة، والنصرانية بعد الْإِنْجِيل.
