“O People of the Scripture, why do you disbelieve in the verses of Allah while you witness [them]” — that they are the verses of Allah, and [that he is] His Messenger. He refers specifically to their scholars, because they find the description of Muhammad in their Scripture, then they disbelieve in him and deny him.
﴿يَا أهل الْكِتَابِ لِمَ تَكْفُرُونَ بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ وَأَنْتُم تَشْهَدُون﴾ أَنَّهَا آيَات الله (وَأَنه) رَسُوله، يَعْنِي بِهِ خَاصَّة عُلَمَائهمْ؛ لأَنهم يَجدونَ نعت مُحَمَّد فِي كِتَابهمْ، ثمَّ كفرُوا بِهِ وأنكروه.
