and reject it at its end—meaning: deny it at its end, and confuse his weak followers so that you may cause them to doubt their religion, for they have no knowledge, nor do they have studies which they engage in—'so that perhaps they will return' from Muhammad and from that which he brought. Mujahid said: The Jews prayed the morning prayer with the Prophet, peace be upon him, at the beginning of the day, and rejected it at its end, out of guile, so that people would see that error had appeared to them after they had followed him. 'Say, "Indeed, the guidance is the guidance of Allah"'—meaning: the religion is the religion of Islam—'"lest one be given the like of what you were given, or that they might argue with you before your Lord."' In this [verse] there is an inversion (taqdim): The Jews of Khaybar only said to the Jews of Medina: 'And do not believe except those who follow your religion'—meaning: Do not trust anyone except those who follow your religion; for no one will ever be given the like of what you have been given, nor will anyone argue with you with a religion like yours before your Lord.
