"Yes, if you remain patient and conscious of Allah, and they come to you in this immediate moment of theirs," meaning from this direction of theirs, "your Lord will reinforce you with five thousand angels having marks (musawwimin)." Qatadah said: Meaning, they have the marks of battle.

Muhammad said: A 'sumah' (mark) is the sign by which a horseman distinguishes himself.

Al-Sha'bi said: He promised them five thousand if they came in that immediate moment, but they did not come in that immediate moment, and He did not reinforce them with five thousand. Rather, He reinforced them with a thousand in succession, and three thousand sent down; they were four thousand, and they are present today among the armies of the Muslims. [Verses 126-132]
