[Then after the distress, He sent down upon you security, a slumber overtaking a faction of you, while another faction became concerned for themselves.] Qatada’s interpretation: They were two groups on that day. As for the believers, God covered them with slumber as security and mercy from Him. As for the other faction, they were the hypocrites; they had no concern except for their own selves, [thinking of God other than the truth—the thought of ignorance. They say, "Is there anything for us in the matter?"] Al-Kalbi said: (They are the hypocrites). They said to Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul: "The Banu al-Khazraj have been killed!" He replied: "Is there anything for us in the matter?" God said: [Say, "Indeed, the matter," meaning: the victory, [belongs entirely to God." They conceal within themselves what they do not reveal to you. They say, "If there had been anything for us in the matter, we would not have been killed right here."] Al-Kalbi said: What they concealed in themselves was that they said: "Had we been upon anything of the matter"—meaning: of the truth—"we would not have been killed right here, and had we been in our homes, death would not have overtaken us." God said to the Prophet: [Say, "If you had been inside your houses, those... would have emerged..."
