Jabir ibn Abdullah said to them: "I adjure you by Allah regarding your Prophet, your religion, and your descendants." They replied: "By Allah, there will be no fighting today, and if we knew there would be fighting, we would have followed you." Allah says: "They were that day closer to disbelief than to faith, saying with their mouths what was not in their hearts."
فَقَالَ لَهُم جَابر بن عبد الله: أنْشدكُمْ الله فِي نَبِيكُم ودينكم وذراريكم. قَالُوا: وَالله لَا يكون الْيَوْم قتال، وَلَو نعلم قتالا لَاتَّبَعْنَاكُمْ. قَالَ الله: ﴿هُمْ لِلْكُفْرِ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَقْرَبُ مِنْهُمْ لِلإِيمَانِ يَقُولُونَ بِأَفْوَاهِهِمْ مَا لَيْسَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ﴾
