"And test the orphans," meaning: examine their intellects and their religious commitment, "until they reach the age of marriage," meaning: puberty. "Then if you perceive in them soundness of judgment," meaning: rectitude in their religion, "give them their wealth, and do not consume it extravagantly and in haste, fearing they will grow up," meaning: hastening to consume it before they grow up and take it from you.
﴿وابتلوا الْيَتَامَى﴾ أَي: اختبروا عُقُولهمْ وَدينهمْ ﴿حَتَّى إِذا بلغُوا النِّكَاح﴾ يَعْنِي: الْحلم. ﴿فَإِنْ آنَسْتُمْ مِنْهُمْ رشدا﴾ صلاحا فِي دينهم ﴿فَادْفَعُوا إِلَيْهِمْ أَمْوَالَهُمْ وَلا تَأْكُلُوهَا إِسْرَافًا وَبِدَارًا أَن يكبروا﴾ أَي: مبادرة أَن يكبروا فيأخذوها مِنْكُم
