It was abrogated by the verse: "Then kill the polytheists wherever you find them." (The words) "Or who come to you, their chests having become constrained," meaning: their chests are unwilling. "To fight you or fight their own people" (the verse). Muhammad said: It is also read "hasiratan suduruhum," meaning: they became narrowed; the term "hasr" (constraint) in the language means narrowing.
His saying: "Then Allah has not made for you a way against them," means: a proof; and this is also abrogated; the verse of fighting abrogated it.
نسخته الْآيَة ﴿فَاقْتُلُوا الْمُشْرِكِينَ حَيْثُ وَجَدْتُمُوهُمْ﴾. ﴿أَو جاءوكم حصرت صُدُورهمْ﴾ أَي: كارهة صُدُورُهُمْ. ﴿أَنْ يُقَاتِلُوكُمْ أَوْ يُقَاتِلُوا قَومهمْ﴾ الْآيَة. قَالَ مُحَمَّد: وتقرأ ﴿حَصِرَةً صدروهم﴾ أَي: ضَاقَتْ؛ الْحصْر فِي اللُّغَة: الضّيق.
قَوْله: ﴿فَمَا جَعَلَ اللَّهُ لكم عَلَيْهِم سَبِيلا﴾ يَعْنِي: حجَّة؛ وَهَذَا مَنْسُوخ أَيْضا؛ نسخته آيَة الْقِتَال.
