[And they call upon none but a rebellious Satan]. Al-Hasan said: Meaning: Those idols did not call them to worship them; rather, it was Satan who called them to worship them.
Muhammad said: The "rebellious" (marid) is the defiant; it is said: "murid" and "marid."
﴿وَإِنْ يَدْعُونَ إِلا شَيْطَانًا مَرِيدًا﴾ قَالَ الحَسَن: أَي: إِن تِلْكَ الْأَوْثَان لم تَدعهُمْ إِلَى عبادتها، إنَّمَا دعاهم إِلَى عبادتها الشَّيْطَان.
قَالَ مُحَمَّد: المريد: العاتي؛ يُقَال: مُرِيد ومارد.
