[It is not according to your wishes, nor the wishes of the People of the Scripture] (Surah An-Nisa: 123). Al-Hasan said: The Jews said to the believers: 'Our book is before your book, and our Prophet is before your Prophet, and our book is the judge over the scriptures that came before it, and we are more guided than you.' The believers said: 'You have lied. We have believed in your book and your Prophet, while you have disbelieved in our book and our Prophet, and our book is the judge over the scriptures that came before it.'

Muhammad said: The meaning is: The reward of Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, is not by your wishes nor by the wishes of the People of the Scripture. [Whoever works evil will be requited for it].

Yahya [narrated] from al-Mu'alla ibn Hilal, from Isma'il ibn Abi Khalid, from Abu Bakr ibn Zuhayr, that Abu Bakr al-Siddiq said: 'O Messenger of Allah, how can there be salvation after this verse?' The Prophet, peace be upon him, said to him: 'Which verse?' He replied: The saying of Allah: [Whoever works evil will be requited for it]. 'Shall we be requited for every evil we have committed, O Messenger of Allah?' The Prophet said: 'May Allah forgive you, O Abu Bakr. Do you not fall ill? Do you not grieve? Do you not experience hardship? Does there not befall you...'
