the messengers [despaired] of their people believing, and their people thought that the messengers had been denied. "Our victory came to them," meaning Our punishment.

"And We saved whom We willed," meaning the Prophet and the believers. "And Our might cannot be repelled," meaning Our punishment, "from the criminal people," meaning the polytheists.
