And "Muqni'i ru'usihim" (raising their heads), meaning: lifting them up. "La yartaddu ilayhim tarfuhum wa af'idatuhum hawa'" (their gaze does not return to them, and their hearts are void), meaning: they gaze fixedly.

Muhammad said: "Tarfuhum" (their gaze) means: their sight. The root of the word comes from the Arabs saying: "tarafa al-rajulu yatrifu tarfan," when a man closes one of his eyelids over the other. Therefore, sight was named "tarf" (a blink/gaze) because it occurs through it. From this is the saying of the poet mentioning Suhayl (the star) in the sky, comparing its flickering to the blinking of an eye:

"I observe a glimpse of Suhayl, as if it were... when it appears in the darkness of the night, it blinks."

His words, Glorious and Exalted be He: "wa af'idatuhum hawa'" (and their hearts are void/hollow), meaning they are between the chest and the throat, so they do not exit through the throat, nor do they return to the chest. He means: the hearts of the disbelievers. This is the interpretation of al-Suddi.

Muhammad said: And it is reported from Ibn 'Abbas: "Hawa'" means empty of all good. Abu 'Ubaydah said: Likewise, everything that is hollow and empty is considered "hawa'" by the Arabs.

Someone else recited:

"As if the saddle upon it, atop a slender ostrich... whose chest is hollow (hawa')."

He means: its bone has no marrow.

Surah Ibrahim, from verse (44) to verse (46).

و ﴿مقنعي رُءُوسهم﴾ أَيْ: رَافِعِيهَا ﴿لَا يَرْتَدُّ إِلَيْهِمْ طرفهم وأفئدتهم﴾ أَيْ: يُدِيمُونَ النَّظَرَ.

قَالَ محمدٌ: (طَرْفُهُمْ) يَعْنِي: نَظَرَهُمْ، وَأَصْلُ الْكَلِمَةِ مِنْ قَوْلِهِمْ: طَرَفَ الرَّجُلُ يَطْرِفُ طَرْفًا، إِذَا أَطْبَقِ أَحَدَ جَفْنَيْهِ عَلَى الآخَرِ؛ فَسُمِّيَ النَّظَرُ طَرْفًا؛ لأَنَّهُ بِهِ يَكُونُ. وَمِنْهُ قَوْلُ الشَّاعِرِ يَذْكُرُ سُهَيْلا - النَّجْمُ فِي السَّمَاءِ، وَشَبَّهَ اضْطِرَابَهُ بِطَرْفِ الْعَيْنِ.

(أُرَاقِبُ لَمْحًا مِنْ سهيلٍ كَأَنَّهُ … إِذَا مَا بَدَا فِي دُجْنَةِ اللَّيْلِ يَطْرِفُ)

قَوْلُهُ ﷿: ﴿وأفئدتهم هَوَاء﴾ بَيْنَ الصَّدْرِ وَالْحَلْقِ؛ فَلا تَخْرُجُ مِنَ الْحَلْقِ، وَلا تَرْجِعُ إِلَى الصَّدْرِ؛ يَعْنِي: قُلُوبَ الْكُفَّارِ؛ هَذَا تَفْسِيرُ السُّدِّيِّ.

قَالَ محمدٌ: وَجَاءَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ: (هواءٌ) أَيْ: خَالِيَةٌ مِنْ كُلِّ خَيْرٍ، وَقَالَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ: وَكَذَلِكَ كُلُّ شيءٍ أَجْوَفَ خاوٍ، فَهُوَ عِنْدَ الْعَرَبِ هَوَاءٌ.

وَأَنْشَدَ غَيْرُهُ:

كَأَنَّ الرَّحْلَ مِنْهَا فَوْقَ صعلٍ … مِنَ الظِّلْمَانِ جُؤْجُؤُهُ هَوَاءُ﴾

يَقُولُ: لَيْسَ لِعَظْمِهِ مخ.
