Then the speech concludes, and He says to those among whom Muhammad was sent: "And you dwelt in the dwellings of those who wronged themselves," through their polytheism; meaning: those who were destroyed from the former nations. "And it became clear to you how We dealt with them," how We destroyed them; He warns them by that. "And We set forth for you the parables," meaning: We described for you the punishment of the former nations; He warns the disbelievers of Mecca.
ثمَّ انْقَطع الْكَلَام، ثمَّ قَالَ لِلَّذِينَ بُعِثَ فِيهِمْ محمدٌ: ﴿وَسَكَنْتُمْ فِي مَسَاكِنِ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ﴾ بِشِرْكِهِمْ؛ يَعْنِي: مَنْ أَهْلَكَ مِنَ الأُمَمِ السَّابِقَةِ ﴿وَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمْ كَيْفَ فعلنَا بهم﴾ كَيْفَ أَهْلَكْنَاهُمْ؛ يُخَوِّفُهُمْ بِذَلِكَ ﴿وَضَرَبْنَا لكم الْأَمْثَال﴾ يَعْنِي: وَصَفْنَا لَكُمْ عَذَابَ الأُمَمِ الخالية؛ يخوف كفار مَكَّة.
