Muhammad said: The singular of "asfad" (shackles) is "safad". It is said: "Safadtu al-rajul" (I shackled the man) when I place him in a shackle, and "asfadtu-hu" (I bestowed upon him) when I give him a gift.
السلَاسِل (يقرن كل إِنْسَان (ل ١٦٨) وَشَيْطَانِهِ الَّذِي كَانَ قَرِينَهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا فِي سِلْسِلَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ.
قَالَ محمدٌ: وَاحِدُ الأَصْفَادِ: صفدٌ) يُقَالُ: صَفَدْتُ الرَّجُلَ؛ إِذَا جَعَلْتُهُ فِي صفدٍ، وَأَصْفَدْتُهُ إِذَا أَعْطَيْتُهُ عَطَاءً.
