"(Their garments will be of tar)" means: their shirts. Al-qitran (tar) is that which is smeared upon camels. Mujahid said regarding "(Their garments will be of tar)": that it means molten copper that has reached its peak heat. "(And the fire will cover their faces)" is like His saying: "(Is he then who will face the evil of the punishment with his face [on the Day of Resurrection]?) [Az-Zumar: 24]"—meaning: he will be dragged upon his face into the Fire.
﴿سرابيلهم من قطران﴾ أَيْ: قُمُصُهُمْ، وَالْقَطِرَانُ: هُوَ الَّذِي يُطْلَى بِهِ الإِبْلُ، وَقَالَ مُجَاهِدٌ: (سرابيلهم من قطران) أَيْ: مِنْ صفرٍ حَارٍّ قَدِ انْتَهَى حَرُّهُ ﴿وَتَغْشَى وُجُوهَهُمُ النَّارُ﴾ هُوَ كَقَوْلِهِ: ﴿أَفَمَنْ يَتَّقِي بِوَجْهِهِ سوء الْعَذَاب﴾ أَيْ: يُجَرُّ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ فِي النَّار
