"O you who have believed, when you rise to prayer"—the [rest of the] verse.
Yahya [narrated]: From Ibrahim ibn Muhammad, from Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Aqil, from Al-Rubayyi' bint Mu'awwidh ibn 'Afra':
That the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) visited her and asked for water for ablution (wudu'). She said: 'I brought him a vessel [containing water] equal to a mudd and a third (or a mudd and a quarter). He washed his hands three times before inserting them into the vessel, then he rinsed his mouth three times, and performed istinshaq (sniffing water into the nose) three times, and washed his face three times, and washed his forearms three times each. Then he wiped his head, from the front to the back, and wiped his ears, both their outsides and insides, and washed his feet [three times].' She said: 'A youth from the Banu Abd al-Muttalib came to me—meaning Ibn Abbas—and I related this hadith to him. He said: "The people insist on washing, but I find nothing in the Book of Allah except wiping."'
