"It is He who created you from clay," meaning: Adam, then He made his progeny thereafter from a descent of weak, contemptible water; meaning: the drop of semen. "Then He decreed a term and a specified time [known] to Him." Qatada said: "Then He decreed a term," meaning: death, "and a specified time [known] to Him," [meaning] that which is between death and the Resurrection. "Then you [still] doubt," you are in doubt concerning the Hour.
﴿هُوَ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ مِنْ طِينٍ﴾ يَعْنِي: آدَمَ، ثُمَّ جَعَلَ نَسْلَهُ بَعْدُ مِنْ سُلَالَةٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ مَهِينٍ ضَعِيفٍ؛ يَعْنِي: النُّطْفَةَ ﴿ثُمَّ قَضَى أَجَلا وَأَجَلٌ مُسَمًّى عِنْدَهُ﴾ قَالَ قَتَادَة: ﴿ثمَّ قضى أَََجَلًا﴾ يَعْنِي: الْمَوْت ﴿وَأجل مُسَمّى عِنْده﴾ مَا بَيْنَ الْمَوْتِ إِلَى الْبَعْثِ ﴿ثمَّ أَنْتُم تمترون﴾ تشكون فِي السَّاعَة.
