"And if you punish, punish with an equivalent of that with which you were harmed." Ibn Abbas’s interpretation: He said: When the day of Uhud came, the polytheists mutilated Hamzah and cut off his genitals. When the Prophet, peace be upon him, saw him, he was overcome with intense grief. He ordered him to be covered with a cloak that was upon him, so he drew it over his face and head and placed idhkhir (rushes) over his feet. Then he said: "I will surely mutilate thirty of the Quraysh." Then Allah revealed: "And if you punish..." until His saying: "And your patience is not but through Allah." So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, became patient and forbade mutilation.
