"And when you see those who engage in [insulting] Our verses," Mujahid said: meaning, they mock them. "Then turn away from them until they engage in a different conversation." This was before he was commanded to fight them.
"And if Satan causes you to forget, then do not remain after the reminder with the wrongdoing people." He was forbidden from sitting with them unless he forgot, so if he remembers, he must stand up.
﴿وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَ الَّذِينَ يَخُوضُونَ فِي آيَاتنَا﴾ قَالَ مُجَاهِدٌ: يَعْنِي: يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ بِهَا ﴿فَأَعْرِضْ عَنْهُمْ حَتَّى يَخُوضُوا فِي حَدِيث غَيره﴾ كَانَ هَذَا قَبْلَ أَنْ يُؤْمَرَ بِقِتَالِهِمْ.
﴿وَإِمَّا يُنْسِيَنَّكَ الشَّيْطَانُ فَلا تَقْعُدْ بَعْدَ الذِّكْرَى مَعَ الْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمين﴾ نُهِيَ أَنْ يَقْعُدَ مَعَهُمْ، إِلَّا أَنْ يَنْسَى فَإِذَا ذَكَرَ فَلْيَقُمْ.
