"O People of the Scripture, there has come to you Our Messenger"—who is Muhammad—"making clear to you upon a period of intermission in messengers, lest you say"—meaning, so that you do not say—"on the Day of Resurrection, 'There came to us no bringer of good tidings and no warner.' But there has come to you a bringer of good tidings"—who gives glad tidings of Paradise—"and a warner"—who warns of the Fire.

Qatadah said: It was mentioned to us that the period of intermission that existed between Jesus and Muhammad was six hundred years, or whatever else Allah willed of that. Surah al-Ma'idah, from verse (20) to verse (23).
