{And it is He who produced} meaning: He created {gardens trellised and untrellised}. Mujahid said: Grapes are among those that are trellised and untrellised. {And the palm trees and the crops, different in their produce} some of it is good, and some of it is inferior. {And the olives and pomegranates, similar} in appearance {and dissimilar} in taste. {Eat of [each of] its fruit when it yields and give its due [zakat] on the day of its harvest}. Al-Hasan said: Meaning: the obligatory Zakat. [Mujahid said: It is that they give from it at the time of its harvest, other than the obligatory Zakat].
{And do not be excessive} do not forbid what the people of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance) forbade of the crops and the livestock.
﴿وَهُوَ الَّذِي أنشأ﴾ أَيْ: خَلَقَ ﴿جَنَّاتٍ مَعْرُوشَاتٍ وَغَيْرَ معروشات﴾ قَالَ (مُجَاهِدٌ): الْعِنَبُ مِنْهُ مَعْرُوشٌ وَغَيْرُ مَعْرُوشٍ ﴿وَالنَّخْلَ وَالزَّرْعَ مُخْتَلِفًا أكله﴾ مِنْهُ الْجَيِّدُ، وَمِنْهُ الرَّدِيءُ ﴿وَالزَّيْتُونَ وَالرُّمَّان متشابها﴾ فِي المنظر ﴿وَغير متشابه﴾ فِي الْمَطْعَمِ ﴿كُلُوا مِنْ ثَمَرِهِ إِذَا أَثْمَرَ وَآتُوا حَقَّهُ يَوْمَ حَصَاده﴾ قَالَ الْحَسَنُ: يَعْنِي: الزَّكَاةَ الْمَفْرُوضَةَ [قَالَ مُجَاهِدٌ: هُوَ أَنْ يَأْتُوا مِنْهُ عِنْدَ حَصَادِهِ، سِوَى الزَّكَاةِ الْمَفْرُوضَة].
﴿وَلَا تسرفوا﴾ لَا تُحَرِّمُوا مَا حَرَّمَ أَهْلُ الْجَاهِلِيَّة من الْحَرْث والأنعام.
