{of your Lord}," meaning: the rising of the sun from its setting place. In the interpretation of the majority, {on the day that some of the signs of your Lord will come}—the rising of the sun from its setting place—{a soul will not benefit from its faith if it had not believed before, or earned good in its faith}. Al-Kalbi said:
Repentance will not be accepted on that day from anyone who was not a believer, nor from anyone who claimed faith if they were not sincere.
Yahya, from Uthman, from Nu'aym ibn Abd Allah, from Abu Hurayrah, who said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "The Hour shall not arrive until the sun rises from its setting place. When the people see it, they will believe, but that is the time when a soul will not benefit from its faith if it had not believed before, or earned good in its faith."
{Say: Wait, indeed we are waiting.} The polytheists were waiting for death to befall the Prophet, while the Prophet was waiting for the punishment to befall them.
Surah Al-An'am from verse (159) to verse (160).
رَبك﴾ يَعْنِي: طُلُوعَ الشَّمْسِ مِنْ مَغْرِبِهَا؛ فِي تَفْسِيرِ الْعَامَّةِ ﴿يَوْمَ يَأْتِي بعض آيَات رَبك﴾ طُلُوعُ الشَّمْسِ مِنْ مَغْرِبِهَا ﴿لَا يَنْفَعُ نَفْسًا إِيمَانُهَا لَمْ تَكُنْ آمَنَتْ مِنْ قَبْلُ أَوْ كَسَبَتْ فِي إيمَانهَا خيرا﴾ قَالَ الْكَلْبِيُّ:
لَا تُقْبَلُ التَّوْبَةُ يومئذٍ مِمَّنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ مُؤْمِنًا، وَلَا مِمَّنْ كَانَ يَدَّعِي الإِيمَانَ؛ إِذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ مُخْلِصًا.
يحيى: عَنْ عُثْمَانَ، عَنْ نُعَيْمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ:
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: " لَا تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ مَغْرِبِهَا؛ فَإِذَا رَآهَا النَّاسُ آمَنُوا، فَذَلِكَ حِينَ لَا يَنْفَعُ نَفْسًا إِيمَانُهَا لَمْ تَكُنْ آمَنَتْ مِنْ قَبْلُ أَوْ كَسَبَتْ فِي إِيمَانِهَا خَيْرًا ".
﴿قُلِ انْتَظِرُوا إِنَّا مُنْتَظِرُونَ﴾ كَانَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ يَنْتَظِرُونَ بِالنَّبِيِّ الْمَوْتَ، وَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ يَنْتَظِرُ بِهِمُ الْعَذَابَ.
