"O children of Adam, take your adornment at every place of worship." Al-Hasan said: The people of the Pre-Islamic period (Jahiliyyah) used to circumambulate the House (the Ka'bah) while naked. So, Allah commanded the Muslims, saying: "Take your adornment at every place of worship." Mujahid said: He commanded them to wear clothing. "And eat and drink," meaning: the lawful. "And do not commit excess," by declaring forbidden what Allah has made lawful for you, just as the people of the Pre-Islamic period forbade the Bahirah, the Sa'ibah, and other things that they declared forbidden.
﴿يَا بَنِي آدَمَ خُذُوا زِينَتَكُمْ عِنْد كل مَسْجِد﴾ قَالَ الْحَسَنُ: كَانَ أَهْلُ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ يَطُوفُونَ بِالْبَيْتِ عُرَاةً؛ فَأَمَرَ اللَّهُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ؛ فَقَالَ: ﴿خُذُوا زِينَتَكُمْ عِنْدَ كل مَسْجِد﴾ قَالَ مُجَاهِدٌ: أَمَرَهُمْ أَنْ يَلْبَسُوا الثِّيَاب ﴿وكلوا شربوا﴾ يَعْنِي: الْحَلَال ﴿وَلَا تسرفوا﴾ فَتُحَرِّمُوا مَا أَحَلَّ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ؛ كَمَا حَرَّمَ أَهْلُ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ مِنَ الْبَحِيرَةِ وَالسَّائِبَةِ، وَغَيْرُ ذَلِكَ مِمَّا حرمُوا
