[As for the thief, both the male and the female, cut off their hands] (Surah Al-Ma'idah, 5:38). In the reading of Ibn Mas'ud, it is: "Cut off their right hands." [As a recompense for what they earned] (5:38), meaning for what they did. [As a deterrent from Allah] (5:38), meaning: as a punishment.
Yahya narrated from al-Mu'alla, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Adam, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, who said: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) cut off the hand of a thief from the wrist joint and cauterized it."
Yahya narrated from al-Nadr ibn Ma'bad, from Abu Qilabah, who said: A man was passed by Abu al-Darda' who had been apprehended for a hadd punishment (prescribed penalty), so the people insulted him. He said: "Do not insult him, but rather praise Allah who saved you."
